May I please...

Miss Manners (in the form of Mamma Susan) has been making the rounds in our household, primarily to provide instruction of a positive and wholesome nature to the older sibling. After the usual 'please' and 'thankyou's, we progressed to a more formal 'May I please have it'.  This was specifically intended to be used by the boy to help him temporarily pause before snatching away any and every toy from the girl.

One day while Yo was in a particularly whiny mood asking for a book to be read to him, Susan asked him to re-phrase it more politely, basically expecting a 'please' to be added to the request.  Instead, what we got was:
"May I please have a read it?"
